Safety and Efficiency: Mutually Exclusive?

By Mike Nelms, Induron Production Manager

Can you be safe AND efficient? Absolutely – if you practice safety and efficiency in the correct fashion.

We’re all looking to be more efficient in our daily tasks, but safety is paramount. How many times have you heard someone in your facility say, “If you put a guard on that, it will slow me down!”?

The key to countering statements like that is to ensure you’re installing the RIGHT type of safety guard for the process being performed, the ergonomics and the machine type itself. If you do this, safety and efficiency can live in harmony. Continue reading Safety and Efficiency: Mutually Exclusive?

‘Incentives for Safety’ Paying Dividends

By Davies Hood, Induron President

In my last safety blog, I commented on the importance of safety in the workplace, and Induron’s mission to support this further in 2013. We kicked off a new incentive plan that year, which focused on no Lost Time Accidents (LTAs), no unexcused absences, and overall improved commitment to safety in our work environment.

I also commented on how we encouraged these goals with prize awards, and that we had six individuals in the operations department meet these goals. We celebrated with a Christmas luncheon and the big prize give-a-way, and it was pretty obvious that this program was effective, and was worth continuing in some form going forward.  Continue reading ‘Incentives for Safety’ Paying Dividends

Why Do We Still Need More Worker Safety Reports?

Here in the United States, we pride ourselves on safety. At Induron, we have monthly meetings taught by outside professionals on a whole host of safety topics – fire safety, safe practices for lifting with overhead cranes, proper use of respirators, and many, many more. We launched, last year, a new incentive program for our staff to reinforce how seriously we take safety at Induron. We ended 2013 as one of our safest reporting years ever, thanks to our staff’s commitment to keeping their workplace safe.

You wouldn’t think that industries in this country were in any way lacking in safety practices and oversights, because of agencies like OSHA, educational and training policies like Induron’s, and the industry’s overall improving safety record. Innovative Coating Protecting Our Service Members

By Jeff White, Induron Sales Manager

Coatings technologies turn up in some pretty amazing places, including in applications to protect our military. The newest innovation is in camouflage face paint. Every soldier has used it, from the government-issue sticks that felt like sandpaper on your face to the easier-on-your-skin “camo compact” that looks like your wife’s makeup kit – only in browns, black and greens.

Now researchers at the University of Southern Mississippi have developed a face paint that provides protection from intense bursts of heat – a situation that often faces our service members when they’re in the vicinity of an IED detonation. This technology looks like a big step towards protecting our service members from future burns from IED explosions. Additionally, it has applications for another group of heroes – firefighters and emergency responders. Continue reading Innovative Coating Protecting Our Service Members

Safety Documentation Goes Global

By Jeff White, Induron Sales Manager

Man, my head is spinning. Just as we all think we’ve figured out how to read an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), the game is about to change.

In 1983, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released its Hazard Communication (HazCom) regulation, which required an MSDS for every potentially hazardous material. It is now a generally accepted practice that MSDSs are reviewed and on-site as a part of every job. And we in the coatings industry and many other industries are better for it. Preserving the next generation.

by Davies Hood
Executive VP, Induron Coatings

As the world becomes a continually “greener” place, the industrial coatings market better get on the bus or get left behind. Emerging technologies are proving that lower and zero VOC coatings can perform as well as or even better than their solvent-born predecessors. Continue reading Preserving the next generation.
