Coatings and linings don’t succeed on paper. They succeed because surface preparation is done correctly, materials are handled properly, and installation techniques are executed with discipline and consistency.
That’s exactly why we structured our recent multi-day field demonstration with Mortarchem, a ceramic epoxy cementitious resurfacer, the way we did.
While the resurfacing and topcoat application could have been completed in a single production day, we intentionally extended the schedule so every contractor could actively participate in each phase of the work. The goal wasn’t speed. The goal was hands-on experience, meaningful engagement, and confidence that carries back to real projects.
Day One: Preparation Sets the Foundation
Monday was dedicated to preparation and staging. Crews performed thorough high-pressure water cleaning using a rotary tip to remove loose, weak, and deteriorated concrete and establish a sound substrate. The clarifier had been decontaminated prior to our arrival, which allowed the crews to move efficiently into surface preparation.
Once cleaning was complete, the most severely damaged areas of concrete were repaired using EFS 707, rebuilding compromised sections and restoring structural integrity where it mattered most.
That evening gave everyone a chance to unwind and connect outside the jobsite. We gathered at a local sports bar, watched Monday Night Football, and collectively put away what looked like well over 1,000 chicken wings. It was a great way to build relationships and keep the momentum going for the days ahead.
Days Two and Three: Hands-On Application
Tuesday and Wednesday were dedicated to hands-on application starting at 9:00 AM each day. Contractors rotated through active work areas applying:
- EFS 707 concrete repair material
- MortarChem cementitious resurfacer
- CeramaSafe 90 ceramic epoxy lining
Attendance was intentionally flexible. Contractors were assigned specific time slots and were able to work remotely from the hotel when not scheduled onsite. This reduced downtime and ensured that when contractors were present, they were actively engaged in the work rather than standing around waiting, which is common at large demo and training events.
Each evening also included a group activity. Tuesday night had a strong turnout for bowling and wrapped up with a game of laser tag, where the Induron team proudly came out victorious.
Why Surface Preparation Matters
A major focus of the demo was showing how proper surface preparation directly impacts coating performance and long-term durability. The scope of work included:
- High-pressure water cleaning with a rotary tip to remove unsound concrete and contaminants
- Concrete patching and repair using EFS 707
- Cementitious resurfacing with Mortarchem to restore surface profile to a monolithic surface
- Application of CeramaSafe 90 over properly prepared substrates
Each step was demonstrated and executed in sequence so attendees could clearly see how rushed work or inadequate preparation can compromise coating performance, adhesion, and long-term service life.
Training Built Around Technique, Not Speed
Rather than prioritizing production pace, the demo emphasized proper technique, material handling, and application best practices. Contractors set up mixing stations, mixed material, sprayed, and troweled products themselves with direct guidance from Induron’s technical staff throughout the process.
Every participant had the opportunity to work directly with the materials, ask questions in real time, and gain confidence in the installation methods before returning to their own projects.
Moving the Industry Forward, Together
With contractors attending from across the country, this hands-on demo reinforced the importance of disciplined surface preparation, proper repair techniques, and correct lining application. It served as both a training environment and a real-world showcase of Induron’s concrete repair, resurfacing, and protective lining systems used in critical water and wastewater infrastructure.
We truly appreciate the strong turnout and engagement from the contractor community and look forward to continuing these field-driven training opportunities that help elevate performance across the industry.
