Induron Protective Coatings is proud to spotlight the recent rehabilitation of the Claryville 750,000-gallon spheroid tank in Campbell County, Kentucky. Completed for Northern Kentucky Water, this project demanded not only quality craftsmanship but also the speed and reliability that Induron’s coatings are engineered to support.

With work unable to begin until after Labor Day, the contractor, L&T Painting, faced a strict 45-day deadline to complete extensive weld repairs, perform a full interior blast & multi-coat repaint, execute partial dry interior work, pressure wash the exterior, and apply a robust overcoat system. Fall weather in northern Kentucky is notoriously unpredictable, but with close coordination and high-performing materials, the team delivered the project on time and to specification.

Coating System Built for Durability

Working from the coating specifications provided by Dixon Engineering, L&T Painting applied a comprehensive Induron coating system designed to maximize long-term corrosion protection:

Interior – Wet:

  • Complete abrasive blast per SSPC SP-10 Near White Metal Blast
  • Full coating system using MC67 primer and PE-70 epoxy

Interior – Dry:

  • Partial dry repair and coating with PE-70

Exterior:

  • Pressure wash and spot overcoat with PE-70
  • Full coat of PE-70
  • Finished with two coats of Induron 6600, providing UV-resistant, long-lasting protection

This protective coating system ensures reliable performance in both immersion and atmospheric conditions—extending the service life of the tank while reducing future maintenance demands.

Repairs that Improve Safety, Function & Longevity

In addition to coating work, the project included a series of mechanical and safety upgrades:

  1. Replace the transition cone manway gasket
  2. Install a gasket on the wet interior roof hatch
  3. Install handholds at roof hatches
  4. Replace the expansion joint
  5. Install a mud valve
  6. Install a fall-prevention device on the wet interior ladder
  7. Replace the roof vent with a pressure-vacuum vent
  8. Install cathodic clips and pressure fitting
  9. Install a roof painter’s railing
  10. Replace dry interior light bulbs

These improvements help ensure operational efficiency, worker safety, and system reliability.

The Challenge: A Lot of Work, a Little Time

Performing significant structural repairs and completing a full interior blast & multi-coat repaint—and doing so within a 45-day window—required detailed planning, strong communication, and products that apply and cure dependably under variable fall conditions. The combination of L&T Painting’s expertise and Induron’s proven coating technologies ensured steady progress despite the seasonal constraints.

The result? A fully rehabilitated, protected, and upgraded tank—completed on schedule.
